New plans for safer drinking water
Released 15 Mar 2007
The Department of Water has finalised two plans to assist in ensuring the supply of safe, good quality drinking water to the community.
Water Resource Management Director with the Department of Water, John Ruprecht, said the Churchman Brook Catchment Area Drinking Water Source Protection Plan and the Wungong Brook Catchment Area Drinking Water Source Protection Plan are part of a series of strategies spearheaded by the Department to identify and protect drinking water sources throughout the state.
"The Department of Water involved local residents, government agencies, Water Corporation and business representatives in the development of these Plans because it's important to ensure we consider and understand the impacts of water resource management at all levels," said Mr Ruprecht.
"We want to ensure the community recognises the importance of these drinking water sources and how they should be managed, so they can help in protecting the dams from existing and future contamination risks."
Mr Ruprecht said the Churchman Brook Catchment Area and Wungong Brook Catchment Area Drinking Water Source Protection Plans are part of a series of reports being prepared by the Department of Water. The Department's drinking water protection program is linked to the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, which provide a framework for the management of drinking water quality, including catchment protection.
- identify potential drinking water quality contamination risks from land use activities within the catchments;
- provide strategies to manage potential risks whilst recognising the rights of landowners to continue established approved land use; and
- recommend modifications to the existing catchment boundary to reflect the physical catchment areas and ensure a high level of protection is maintained for each surface water source.
The Churchman Brook Dam and the Wungong Brook Dam provide drinking water to the Integrated Water Supply System, which supplies over 1.5 million people in the Greater Perth metropolitan area, Mandurah, Pinjarra, Harvey and the Goldfields.
