Our role
The Kwinana Peel Region extends from Cockburn in the north, east via Serpentine Jarrahdale, Wandering and Cuballing, then south to Williams, Boddington and Waroona, encompassing the City of Mandurah and the Shire of Murray.
The Peel region boasts one of the largest and most studied and internationally recognised estuarine systems in the State, namely the Peel Harvey system. It also includes the RAMSAR listed Peel Yalgorup Wetland, of which both the estuary and wetland systems are recognised internationally for their values. However, notably the region also contains two of most degraded river systems in the State namely the Murray and Serpentine Rivers.
The Region also includes the largest industrial areas in the state in Kwinana and is home to many large global industries (both mining and processing) such as Alcoa Australia. The region is well recognised in its current and projected population growth and rapid urban and associated expansion, an issue that requires sound water resource planning. These issues are well recognised through the states growth and planning strategies and many new initiatives such as the Urban Drainage Initiative, and the Perth-Peel Regional Water Plan are well underway to better manage these issues.
The Kwinana Peel region has 29 staff, managed by the regional manager Leon Brouwer. The Regional office is based in Mandurah, from where the range of the Department of Water's functions is primarily delivered, with the Water Resource Use business being delivered from an office in Kwinana.
