Esperance groundwater area

The Esperance ground water area is 725 km south-east of Perth on the Southern Ocean coastline. The groundwater area forms a narrow coastal strip five to ten kilometres wide between Coramup Road in the east and Lake Gore in the west and covers an area of approximately 360 km2.

Groundwater resources in the plan area

The Esperance groundwater area is situated on the eastern portion of the Bremer Basin. The ground water area has been divided into the four resource units: Warden, Town, Twilight, and Butty subareas shown in the map below.

The aquifers in the Esperance groundwater area have been divided into two distinct groundwater groups based on the hydrogeology: Superficial aquifer; and Fractured rock aquifer.

Water planning for the Esperance groundwater area

We have completed a management plan for the groundwater resources in the Esperance groundwater area. Esperance groundwater subareas management plan was released in May 2007.

The plan contains allocation limits that define how much water can be abstracted from the water resource units each year. It includes policies for how we will allocate and manage water resources and informs how we will monitor, measure and evaluate the objectives of the plan.

Why has the department prepared a water allocation plan?

Planning is needed to ensure that the needs of the community and the environment are protected while providing users with secure water supplies

How can I access information on the Esperance groundwater area that the department has produced?

We are committed to making our technical information that is used in the planning process available to the public.
