Released 25 Jan 2018
Padbury flood expert Simon Rodgers was named as a recipient of an Australian Day Achievement Medallion as part of an Australia-wide recognition of the contribution of public servants to the nation.
Australia Day achievement medallion recipients are selected by their employer as part of a national program run by the Australia Day Council.
Mr Rodgers was awarded the medallion at a ceremony at the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation in Perth for his achievements as a floodplain engineer for the State Government.
Presenting the medallion Department of Water and Environmental Regulation Director General Mike Rowe acknowledged Mr Rodgers as a leader in his field.
“You have worked on the science of rivers in flood for more than 20 years and are a recognised expert in Western Australia and nationally,” he said.
“Over that time you have been an integral member of the State emergency flood response network team working with floods on all the big rivers in the state - the Ord, Fitzroy, De Grey, Gascoyne, Greenough, Swan and Avon, Blackwood and across the south coast.
“You have been a leader in developing the department’s expertise in floodplain management advice, influencing local councils and other agencies to be proactive in setting development controls that reduce risks of flood damage to homes, businesses and essential infrastructure.
“This includes more recently working with State and local governments on the flood risk to urban infrastructure from sea level rises as a result of climate change.
“As a result of your work, communities across the state are safer from flooding, emergency response agencies are able to better serve the public in times of flooding crisis and local governments can plan ahead to reduce the risk of flooding. The Australia Day achievement medallion is part of a nationally recognised process run by the Australia Day Council in which public sector organisations recognise the outstanding contributions and performance of their staff.
