Water expert Dr Sandie McHugh of Mt Lawley was named as a recipient of an Australian Day Achievement Medallion as part of an Australia-wide recognition of the contribution of public servants to the nation.
Dr McHugh was awarded the medallion at a ceremony at the Department of Water in Perth for her achievements in groundwater investigation, sustainable water resources management and leadership of water resource assessment teams.
Presenting the medallion Department of Water A/Director General Mike Rowe acknowledged Dr McHugh as a leader in her field.
“Her impressive body of work contributes to her reputation as one of the State’s leading groundwater scientists, and has helped establish Western Australia as a recognised world leader in this field.
Dr McHugh’s work has made significant contributions to the mapping and modelling of Perth’s major water resource, the Gnangara groundwater system.
She has also formulated, planned and implemented hydrogeological investigations across Western Australia.
“Sandie’s professional life has focussed on increasing understanding of the need for sustainable management of groundwater systems.
“Her innovative and well-targeted investigations have built new knowledge of the nature and characteristics of groundwater systems that are a dominant source of water throughout the State.
“In doing so she has made a significant contribution to the water industry, particularly the science of hydrogeology at State and national levels, and the results of her ground-breaking work have and will continue to be used to improve water management, planning and policy in Western Australia and elsewhere into the future.”
In 2013 Sandie won the Institute for Public Administration award for academic excellence.
The Australia Day achievement medallion is part of a nationally recognised process run by the Australia Day Council that acknowledges the outstanding contributions and performance of public sector staff. For more information go to www.australiaday.org.au.
