Contract awarded for Kent Street Weir refurbishment
Released 12 Dec 2016
The Department of Water has awarded a contract for the refurbishment of Kent Street Weir on the Canning River.
Manager Swan Avon region Don Cummins said Ertech Pty Ltd had been awarded the design and construct contract for the upgrade, with works scheduled to start in February 2017.
“The new weir will include a fishway and automated weir gates as well as an upgraded walkway that will continue to provide access for pedestrians, cyclists and other members of the public,” Mr Cummins said.
Works are expected to take 4-6 months and are being managed by the Department of Water, in conjunction with the Department of Parks and Wildlife and the City of Canning.
City of Canning Mayor Paul Ng said the works on the Kent Street Weir will mean the area will continue to be a popular spot for recreation for many years to come.
“Both residents and visitors to Canning enjoy the Kent Street Weir and the surrounding parks. The upgraded Weir will ensure this popular spot will not only continue to be a favourite recreational area but will ensure the natural flora and fauna will continue to flourish,” Mayor Ng said.
Mr Cummins said the department was making sure the local community is kept informed about the refurbishment as it progresses.
“The department has launched a webpage to keep the community updated, and we will upload details of the new design as soon as these are finalised.
“Letters have also been sent to local residents informing them of the upcoming works.
“During the refurbishment a temporary bridge will be installed to minimise disruption to the public and maintain access across the river.”
Kayak and canoe access at the site will be available on both sides of the weir, however some restrictions may apply. A map showing alternative access points to the river is available on the website.
The areas surrounding the works including the park and public facilities will still be available for use, and the Canning River Café, the Canning River Eco Education Centre and the Castledare miniature railway will be open for business as usual.
The weir is important in maintaining water quality for upstream freshwater ecosystems and users of the Canning River Regional Park. The upgrade will improve safety for all users of the weir, extending the life of the weir by approximately 50 years.
