Avon flows lifting as descent levels go live
Released 05 Aug 2016
Live data from gauging stations measuring river levels in the Avon catchment have picked up even more water flowing into the river as the time clock counts down to WA’s premier whitewater event this weekend.
“All rainfall at the moment is pretty much running straight off into the river as the catchments are now saturated, so a healthy volume of water is assured for the Avon Descent race this year,” Department of Water Swan Avon measurement manager Bern Kelly said.
Mr Kelly said levels had been quite good compared to last year, and recent rains were adding to a lift recorded earlier in the week in the upper catchment from last weekend’s rainfall.
“York on Thursday was 251 mm over the rock control with a slight rising trend set to continue over the next couple of days, while Northam was 120 mm over the Northam weir and steady.”
Water levels for the Avon Descent will once again be made available to the public live via the internet through the Department of Water’s Water Online service.
The department’s monitoring and information services provide valuable information about the condition of the state’s freshwater resources to assist the broader interests of the community, including levels for the Avon River.
“The department has an extensive river monitoring network throughout the State that records the volume and speed of water flowing through catchments,” Department of Water A/Director Water Assessment and Allocation Roy Stone said.
“This is used to quantify water resources as well as support flood controls and warnings by providing information to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), local governments and others.
“This is one weekend where this network can be used for both the critical measurement of water resources as well as for the general public’s interest in this iconic Western Australian event.”
