Dam releases updated in response to forecast
Released 29 Dec 2010
With the poor dam inflows this winter, the Department of Water in consultation with the Water Corporation adjusted the release regime of a number of dams in the Perth Hills and Peel regions that support downstream flows into rivers during summer.
The releases are part of ongoing surface water management and the volumes released are designed to support environmental flows.
"We know that periods of extended hot weather are particularly hard on the rivers," Director Water Resource Management Greg Davis said.
"The department is monitoring flows regularly at all of the affected rivers and also monitoring weather forecasts.
"The department has been in contact with users downstream notifying them to expect reduced releases and asking them to reduce their use of water from the rivers by 50 per cent where they can and where possible to use alternative water sources.
"The health of our rivers is very important and we ask those who live along side the rivers and who take water from them to take as little as possible during periods of hot weather.
"Our key message is to be aware of other people needs and the needs of the environment in accessing water from the rivers and to share this important resource equitably."
