Community forum discussions about the future of the Gnangara groundwater system
Released 06 Aug 2009
This is the fifth in a series of forums being held across the suburbs which over-lie the groundwater system.
The Gnangara groundwater system extends between the Swan Estuary, Gingin Brook, Ellenbrook and the Indian Ocean and has approximately 600,000 people living on top of it.
The Department of Water's Director Strategic Policy and Water Services John Loney said the community forum aims to provide a summary of the draft Gnangara sustainability strategy (GSS) and facilitate comment on the strategy document.
"The forum will outline recommendations for the complexity of issues that need addressing on an urgent basis by the community and government, if this important water source is to be sustained," Mr Loney said.
"The draft strategy is available for public comment until 31 August and we are hoping that knowledge sharing at the community forum will assist people to make their submissions.
"It is no secret that the ecological and socio-economic uses of the system are under threat because groundwater levels have fallen significantly since the early 1970s – primarily from declining rainfall.
"Other contributing factors include increased groundwater abstraction for public and private uses, losses associated with pine plantations and altered frequency of burning natural woodlands. Rapid population growth is predicted to increase this pressure further."
Mr Loney said the GSS committee was urging an enthusiastic response during the public consultation period and the forum aimed to provide the community with the information required to make an informed public submission.
"The forum will also provide the community with an opportunity to lodge a submission as a group on the day; and provide the GSS team with a public submission," he said.
"It would assist if you are familiar with the draft Gnangara sustainability strategy before attending the forum which will include overviews, question and answer, and public submission session."
Electronic copies of the strategy are available from the Gnangara sustainability strategy website at www.gnangara.water.wa.gov.au.
