Our role
The Swan Avon Region includes the Perth Metropolitan Area and extends north to Lancelin, and east to include the Avon River Basin. The Region also looks after the Goldfields Region for all areas except the Shire of Dundas.
Due to its large size the staff deal with a number of varied water management issues throughout the region.
The Swan Avon region has 65 staff managed by the Regional Manager, Ross Sheridan. The region has 3 offices based in Victoria Park, Northam and Welshpool.
Ellam Street, Victoria Park
The Ellam Street Office provides regional administration and strategic management. The office also delivers for the Swan Coastal Plain and Goldfields including:
- water quantity management, including licensing and compliance enforcement;
- Integrating water management into land-use planning;
- drinking water source protection;
Northam
The Northam office provides services to the Avon district by:
- supporting community groups on waterway and catchment issues;
- agency land management;
- waterways and catchment management;
- drinking water source protection;
- land use planning and drainage advice;
- salinity management advice; and
- delivery of Projects on behalf of the Avon Catchment Council for Waterways Management and Natural Diversity.
Northam also supports the whole region through:
- Financial and administrative support.
Welshpool
The Welshpool office provides water measurement services to the entire region by operation, maintenance and data management of water and weather environmental sensing equipment for a broad range of long term monitoring projects and short and medium experimental projects. These studies are the knowledge base in the Department in the areas of floodwarning, salinity engineering evaluation, acid groundwater, estuarine oxygenation management , streamflow and salinity in the Avon, urban drainage, the environmental water provisions of the Gnangara and Jandakot groundwater systems, effects of catchment thinning on the Wungong, nutrient reduction through Nutrient intervention and Contamination from mining.
