Pilbara regional plan

Sustainable management of the Pilbara's water resources is essential to the future of the region. The region's groundwater and surface-water resources support the ecosystems and biodiversity that make it unique. They also provide drinking water to a growing population and provide water for mining, agriculture, industry and tourism.

The Department of Water has developed the Pilbara regional water plan draft for public comment in partnership with interested and affected parties to provide a strategic vision guiding the sustainable management of the region's water resources and water services.

The draft for public comment provides a strategic overview of the major challenges facing the Pilbara region as we proceed through a period of strong regional growth and climate change. To meet these challenges, a vision for the region's water future to 2030 has been developed with an action plan over a five year time frame.

The draft plan was released on 2 December 2008 for a four months public comment period closing 23 March 2009.
