Salinisation of waterways is a significant and growing concern in Western Australia, both through specific land use impacts such as vegetation clearing and due to a drying climate. Increased salinity has a number of direct and indirect impacts on our rivers, including loss of aquatic fauna and vegetation.
The Department of Water has invested significant resources in managing rising salinity, with an entire branch of the department dedicated to this issue. Salinity is also monitored and assessed within a number of other program areas, including water quality, river and estuary health assessments.
