The department’s Phytoplankton Ecology Unit co-ordinates surveillance of algae in a number of rivers and estuaries around the state where algal blooms are a recognised ecological problem.
By undertaking this monitoring it is possible for us to gain an understanding as to what triggers algal blooms and why certain species bloom at particular times. It also allows us to understand the natural cycles that occur in our waterways.
