Project objectives

The project was developed to encourage more efficient water use in an area where groundwater is in high demand, and is an important drinking water source in the Perth region

The Department of Agriculture supplies the crop water application rates on which water licences are based. Metering is a good way to double-check whether these figures are accurate and whether allocation limits are kept up-to-date with developments in technology.

This project was designed to benefit three major sectors:

  • Licensees – Providing accurate data will assist licensees to modify their water use practices. Licensees who have had meters installed for some time say they have made noticeable improvements in water use efficiency because they can monitor water usage accurately and then fine tune their irrigation practices to be within the licensed entitlements.
  • Community – Making licensees more accountable for water use will help to ensure there will be enough water for all users for years to come.
  • Water Resource Management – Having more accurate data will assist with decision-making and planning.
