Approvals
An across-agency approval framework for the use of non-drinking water in Western Australia has been developed to guide proponents of non-drinking water schemes through the approvals process. It applies to the use of non-drinking water options through storage and delivery systems such as managed aquifer recharge and third pipe systems.
The framework does not apply to single household options like greywater systems, ATUs, rainwater tanks and garden bores, unless they are part of an integrated water management system. The local council can provide information on single household option approvals.

1 While the DOW only has a direct approval role where the wastewater scheme involves managed aquifer recharge, the department assesses and endorses non-drinking water concepts through the land planning process.
2 WC has a role where recycled water is taken from a WC asset or where a third pipe scheme is connected to the mains drinking water scheme
3 On-site wastewater treatment systems (Aerobic Treatment Units) in unsewered areas can only be used as per Department of Health Code of Practice for the Design, Manufacture, Installation and Operation of Aerobic Treatment Units.
