General considerations
The following factors have an impact on the groundwater quality and availability:
- geology and position within the groundwater flow system
- effects of the predicted drying climate
- contaminated sites from previous land uses
- acidification from acid sulfate soils
- salinity
- salt water intrusion, e.g. through excessive abstraction
- high level of nutrients.
Other considerations may include:
- ease of access to the aquifer
- depth to groundwater
- design requirements.
