Groundwater

General considerations

The following factors have an impact on the groundwater quality and availability:

  • geology and position within the groundwater flow system
  • effects of the predicted drying climate
  • contaminated sites from previous land uses
  • acidification from acid sulfate soils
  • salinity
  • salt water intrusion, e.g. through excessive abstraction
  • high level of nutrients.

Other considerations may include:

  • ease of access to the aquifer
  • depth to groundwater
  • design requirements.
