Approval process

The approval of non-drinking water schemes is the responsibility of a number of state and local government agencies. To ease the way for proponents of such systems an across-agency approval framework for the use of non-drinking water in Western Australia has been developed.

The approval framework aligns with the Better Urban Water Management process and will assist proponents in supplying timely information and applications for non-drinking water scheme approvals. It will also reduce duplication and remove barriers to adopting non-drinking water supplies where this is economically, socially and environmentally viable.

It applies to the use of non-drinking water options through storage and delivery systems such as managed aquifer recharge and third pipe schemes. It does not apply to single household options like greywater reuse systems, ATUs, rainwater tanks and garden bores, unless they are part of an integrated water management system.

The Department of Water is the lead agency for the approval process that provides proponents with consolidated, across-agency advice. For more information contact the Water Recycling and Efficiency branch at recycling@water.wa.gov.au.
