The Gingin groundwater area covers approximately 6 000 km2 of the Northern Perth Basin, extending between Guilderton and Bindoon in the south, to Grey and Moora in the north.
Groundwater resources in the plan area
The Gingin groundwater area, along with the Jurien and Arrowsmith groundwater areas, makes up the Northern Perth Basin. Gingin groundwater area is divided into 22 sub-areas. Sub-areas are localised planning zones.
The groundwater resources of the Gingin region are contained in a series of aquifers: unconfined superficial and surficial aquifers, fractured bedrocks and the semi-confined and confined aquifers of Poison Hill, Mirrabooka, Leederville, Leederville - Parmelia, Yarragadee, Cattamarra and Lesueur.

Water planning in the Gingin area
We are currently developing an allocation plan for the Gingin groundwater area.
The plan will include allocation limits, which will define how much water is available in the Gingin groundwater area. The plan also includes policies for how the water resources will be allocated and managed.
This plan is expected to be released for public comment in 2012.
We recently held a meeting with stakeholders and gave a presentation on the hydrogeology of the Gingin groundwater area as well as to discuss water issues in the area. Click here to view the presentation and learn about the groundwater system in Gingin.
Our 2002 Interim Allocation Strategy is available for Gingin groundwater, pending the release of the 2012 allocation plan.
Why is the department preparing a water allocation plan?
Demand for groundwater in the Gingin area is high, and strong growth continues especially for horticulture.
A water allocation plan is needed to ensure that the needs of the community and the environment are protected while providing users with secure water supplies.
How can I access any of the information on Gingin that the department has produced?
We are committed to making our technical information, which is used in the planning process, available to the public.
A list of available documents can be accessed via the publications link at the top right of this page.
Please also visit the Gingin surface water webpage if you would like surface water information.
The Department has recently published a report outlining groundwater-surface water interaction along the Gingin Brook. Click here to view the report.
