Different regions within Western Australia face different water issues, challenges and opportunities. For example, the issues faced in the Pilbara differ vastly from those confronting the South West.
Regional water plans identify:
- water issues that exist or will be apparent in the future
- the strategies to tackle these issues and
- actions that will be implemented.
Regional plans also ensure appropriate water information is provided to enable strategic planning, that supports future land use decisions. Changing land uses can be highly dependent on water availability.
The planning areas generally align with the Regional Development Commission boundaries - with variations where appropriate to manage specific water resource, stakeholder or servicing considerations.

Working with our community and stakeholders
The department recognises that stakeholder input and support is integral to the success of regional planning. Therefore, the regional planning process will involve the community and interest groups in formalising any actions or positions. We will aim to seek a range of views around various issues raised through the consultation process, which will also be developed with involvement by any interested and affected parties.
