The WA Government committed to securing Western Australia's water future and established a vision for water resource management with the release of the State Water Plan 2007.
The plan is a whole-of-government initiative with 11 agencies sharing more than 100 prioritiy actions over the next 5 years. This far-reaching document provides a strategic policy and planning framework for meeting the State's water demands to the year 2030 and builds on the foundations of the State Water Strategy 2003, the National Water Reform 2004 and the Blueprint for Water Reform in Western Australia 2006.
The planning horizon is to 2030, integrating with land and source development timetables where possible. Using the State Water Plan as a base, various strategic plans, regional water plans and strategic water issue plans are developed, along with water management plans, allocation, drinking water source protection, drainage, waterways and flood plans.
The State Water Plan establishes broad water management objectives for Western Australia. These consider times of water resource abundance and scarcity, recognising the impact of expected climate variation. The objectives for the strategic management of water resources are of relevance to the community and all water users.
In essence, it provides a framework for the community, water users and other stakeholders to understand, engage and assess progress towards the strategic management of water in Western Australia.
The State Water Plan 2007 includes three major components –
1. An overview of water resources availability and use
2. Water policy and planning frameworks
3. More than 100 priority actions to progress water resources management in Western Australia by 2011.
The Department of Water will coordinate the implementation of the plan and report publicly on progress.
