For many decades surface water has been an important water source for horticulture and agriculture in the Gingin plan area. In the last thirty years, there has been less rainfall. Flows in the brooks, including summer flows recharged by groundwater, have declined.

The department has responded to water users’ concerns about the impact of upstream abstraction on downstream water users and the environment. The plan outlines how the department will allocate water and manage abstraction, particularly during summer when flows are low and demand is high.

Our goal is to optimise water availability within a sustainable limit. Surface water abstraction in the plan area has reached, and in some areas has exceeded sustainable limits. The plan aims for a secure supply for existing horticultural and agricultural use of the surface water resources, while protecting the stream ecology.

Your input on our Gingin surface water allocation plan is important as it will help us improve the plan. Once you have read this document, if you would like to comment on the plan please send your comments to allocation.planning@water.wa.gov.au by 5pm Tuesday 22 December 2009. Alternatively, you may send your comments to the address provided in the summary of this document.
