Well, summer is officially over for another year! Thankfully, we still have some sunny days left to enjoy. Why not set one of those days aside to make your home more Waterwise. Here's what to do this month!

Install a dual flush toilet system.

Install a greywater re-use system.

Top up mulch.

It's amazing how small changes can make such a massive difference. Take toilets, for example. Simply by installing a dual flush system in your household toilet/s, you'll save 33 000 litres of water per year. Incredible, but true! You can save even more water by throwing tissues, cotton buds, cigarette butts and other rubbish in the bin, rather than flushing them down the toilet. Keep a small bin in your bathroom or toilet to encourage guests to do the same.

Another way to stop water going to waste is to install a greywater re-use system. These remarkable systems irrigate your garden with the treated run-off from your washing machine, shower, dishwasher and more. Both systems will ultimately pay for themselves through the savings you make on your water bill.

As we move into autumn, it's also important to remember to top up the mulch you applied to the garden in spring. Spread at least 50mm of mulch over the whole planting area, leaving a small area of breathing space at the base of the stem. Be careful not to turn or disturb the mulch as this will break the fine feeder roots that develop between the mulch and the soil.

Even though the wet season is coming to an end, we're still in for some rainfall. Please read the following tips carefully to be sure you're managing water wisely this March.

Check your reticulation timer.

Make sure the timer only comes on between 6pm and 9am.

Get a Waterwise home assessment.

If you're planning to turn the reticulation back on, make sure it's set to water only every second day for no longer than 10 minutes per station. And remember you're only allowed to have the sprinklers on between 6pm and 9am on one of your designated watering days.

Now that your reticulation is all set, it's time to turn our attention to inside the home. For those short of time, remember it's quick and easy to arrange a Waterwise home assessment. A Waterwise plumber will come to your home, look at all the ways you use water and offer suggestions of how you can use even less. Easy! To find a Waterwise plumber near you, call 13 10 39.
