Even though July is traditionally a wet month, we need to be Waterwise all year round. Here's how we can do our bit this month.

Install a rainwater tank.

Catch the 'warm-up' water in the shower.

July is a great month for rainfall, which means our gardens get more than enough water. In fact, they receive so much water much of it is lost as surface run-off.

Why not store rainwater in a rainwater tank and have the water plumbed in to flush toilets and wash clothes while the tank is continually filled during winter? There are many affordable tanks on the market and all tanks will eventually pay for themselves through savings on your water bill.

Another great tip for winter is to place a bucket in the shower to catch the 'warm-up' water (it's the water we let run down the drain before it becomes hot - usually quite a bit in winter!) This water can be used for dishes, indoor plants or the garden, saving thousands of litres of water a year.

We can all do our bit to save water.

The dry days of July are a harsh reminder of our need to save water. Here are your Waterwise tips for July.

Check sprinklers are running on the days and time allowed.

Stop leaks.

Install an in-tap regulator.

Are you following the roster? As Western Australia experiences its driest years in over a century, we all need to make sure we're doing our bit to save water. Check the following roster to confirm your watering days and remember to water only 10 minutes per station between the hours of 6pm and 9am.

Sometimes our homes can be wasting water without us even realising it. There's no excuse for not fixing a leaking tap, but what about the leaks you can't see or hear? A simple way to check for leaks is to turn off all taps and any appliances that use water (like the dishwasher) then check your water meter. If the meter is continuing to click over, there's a leak somewhere! A quick call to a Waterwise Plumber can find the problem.

Another simple way to save water is to install an in-tap regulator. By reducing the water flow to a predetermined rate, you'll cut your water use by half and enjoy a softer flow without the annoying splashing.
