As we experience our driest years in over a century, we all need to make sure we're doing our bit to save water. February is a short month, so let's make every day count.

Check sprinklers are running on the days and time allowed.

Stop leaks.

Install an in-tap regulator.

Are you following the roster? Check the following roster to double-check your watering days and remember to water only 10 minutes per station between the hours of 6pm and 9am.

Sometimes our homes can be wasting water without us even realising it. There's no excuse for not fixing a leaking tap, but what about the leaks you can't see or hear? A simple way to check for leaks is to turn off all taps and any appliances that use water (like the dishwasher) then check your water meter. If the meter is continuing to click over, there's a leak somewhere! A quick call to a Waterwise plumber can find the problem.

Another simple way to save water is to install an in-tap regulator. By reducing the water flow to a predetermined rate, you'll cut your water use by half and enjoy a softer flow without the annoying splashing.

Did you know that an enormous 50% of our household water usage ends up on the garden? This February, let's focus on how we can reduce our water usage outdoors.

Mulch your garden.

Add wetting agent to lawns.

Mulch. Mulch. Mulch. If everyone fully utilised mulch in the garden, a much lower percentage of household water usage would end up on the garden.

The even better news is that mulching is very easy and now is a great time to start. Raw materials like woodchips and tree clippings are best but any organic mulch will suffice. Simply spread at least 50mm of mulch over the whole planting area, leaving a small amount of breathing space at the base of the stem. Be sure not to turn or disturb the mulch as this will break the fine feeder roots that develop between the mulch and the soil.

In addition to mulch, a wetting agent can help overcome water repellence in soils, allowing water to penetrate the soil more quickly and in larger amounts. You can find wetting agents at your local nursery or garden centre.
