Can you feel it? April is when we really notice the weather starting to cool, with those odd rainy days becoming more frequent. Why not make some small changes yourself, and follow these Waterwise tips:

Wash your car on the lawn - use a bucket not the hose.

Hand water at the base of plants.

Who left that hose running? When it's time to wash the car, don't use the hose unless it has a trigger spray.

Simply fill a bucket of water and remember to always wash the car on the lawn. As well as making use of the water, most grassy areas will benefit from the phosphates found in many car shampoos, plus the detergent is also effective in breaking down water repellence.

When watering the rest of the garden, make sure you hand water at the base of plants. A watering can or trigger sprayer can help you to aim correctly. Don't water the leaves or branches as it will only evaporate off.

Can you feel it? Yep, it's the start of the dry season! Let's all make the effort to be more Waterwise with these simple-to-follow steps.

Check the reticulation system.

Consider downsizing the lawn.

If your garden is full of native Australian plants, it's well prepared to survive the next eight months with very little watering. For those yet to plant native species, it's time to check the reticulation system.

Turn the system on and look to see that none of the pipes are cracked or leaking. It also pays to make sure that the sprinklers are well positioned at the base of plants and aren't watering the footpath or driveway. Plus, don't forget that your system should be set to only water every second day. If there is ever a power blackout, re check your reticulation system to make sure it hasn't reset itself. Households can be fined for not following the sprinkler roster correctly.

A great way to cut back on sprinkler use is to downsize the amount of lawn you have. Many lawns require a lot of water, so only keep as much as you need and pave the remainder. When planting lawn for the first time, choose a hardy water-efficient species such as Couch, Buffalo, Saltene or Kikuyu.
