Vacation Employment Program

Real opportunities, real experience, real life

The Department of Water seeks university students to participate in its Vacation Employment Program. The program is for current Uni students who are looking to get some first hand experience in the public sector.

The Vacation Employment Program for 2009 has now closed. The advertising period for the 2010/2011 vacation period will commence in June 2010.

What will I get to do?

The Department of Water manages Western Australia's precious water resources and is responsible for ensuring there is an adequate supply to meet the needs of our community now and in the future. The Vacation Employment Program provides a number of positions across the agency, examples of this from previous years include:

 Salinity and Water Resource Recovery Branch

Climate and vegetation
Work with researchers and natural resource managers to help us to understand vegetation water use in our great southern forests.

Wheatbelt salinity and water resource recovery
Work with researchers and natural resource managers to help to develop management techniques and solutions to wheatbelt dryland salinity and acidity.

Water Allocation
Work with progressive environmental scientists, water planners and natural resource managers to understand ecological, social and cultural dependence on the water across the State. Assist with the preparation of ecological water requirements and environmental monitoring programs. Find out how water is allocated and protect the water resources for future use. Assist with the preparation of water allocation plans. Help to develop policies for better water management.

Information Services
Get caught up in all aspects of information services including Information Systems, information management, Geospatial Information Systems, and Information Communications and Technology. Work with IT Help Desk Staff to capital replace personal computers within the Department. Learn how Help Desk is managed.

Water Recycling and Efficiency
Interested in developing innovative water solutions? Work with researchers and policy officers in the Water Recycling and Efficiency Branch to progress non-drinking water options in Western Australia.

Urban Drainage Planning
Interested in working with enthusiastic environmental officers and water engineers in our Drainage and Waterways program. Assist with managing the State’s waterways and to improve water management and the form of our urban areas.

Water Source Protection
Help protect water resources by assisting with the preparation of drinking water source protection plans and looking at water contamination.

Finance
Gain experience across a range of financial activities and functions with a medium sized organisation that delivers crucial services to the states water users. Be exposed to and involved in financial services, reporting, budgeting and administrative activities involving fleet, accommodation and procurement.

Legislative Reform Branch
Assist with the development of Water law and aid legal research on water law, environmental law and natural resource management law

Can I apply?

The Program is open to all undergraduate students who will be continuing their studies. If you are an overseas students studying in Western Australia, you are eligible providing your visa has sufficient work entitlements. Australian citizens / residents studying overseas are also welcome to apply.

How do I apply?

The Vacation Employment Program applications open for a two week period in June / July. Simply complete the application form and submit along with your resume, academic statement and a covering letter (at most two pages long) outlining what area(s) you are most interested in and why.
